TheRuffcats, an eight-piece live band from Berlin, are renowned for their heavy funk and progressive soul stylings. Known as the studio and backing band for German soul shouter Flo Mega, they have collaborated with various artists such as Bajka, Jaguar Wright, and Ladi6. Their debut album, "The Essence Pt.1", showcases a blend of influences from hip-hop, soul, psych, jazz, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Dilla, Manfred Krug, Can, and UK future bass. The album was partly recorded by accident at Lovelite studios in Berlin, with additional contributions from studio owner Jochen Stroh, who has worked with Ebo Taylor, Whitefield Brothers, Tony Allen, and Blitz the Ambassador. "The Essence Pt.1" offers raw jams that pay homage to the past while pushing boundaries to create something fresh and exciting, encompassing genres such as funk, afro-beat, jazz, psych, and latin with a 2012 hip-hop mindset.
